Almonds against Milk
Say goodbye to your morning glass of milk say hello to almonds Building and maintaining healthy bones is a major concern for everyone. We all know that eating foods rich in calcium is necessary to achieve a healthy bone structure. What we don't know is that the foods that are generally known as calcium rich might prevent us from absorbing the so needed calcium itself. We think that a glass of milk, or a pot of yogurt in the morning is a healty ritual. Western diet is based on high amounts of protein; we think that the more protein we eat, the healthier we become. Our muscles need protein, don't they? Carbs are bad, fat is bad, protein is good! What if we eat too much protein? What happens then? We never stop to think that our protein intake might be higher than necessary. If our protein intake is too high, we prevent ourselves from fully absorbing calcium. The average person absorbs about 10% of the calcium he ingests. That should ring some alarm bells. Maybe we don't need more calcium, but we need to facilitate its absorption. We need to find foods that are easily exploitable from our body cells. A handfull of almonds in the morning is perfect, our body is saying thank you! Why is that? It's all about chemistry and formulas. Think of tetris, yes the game where little pieces are falling and you have to tack them where they fit. Our body is taking little pieces of nutriments and is dividing them into smaller pieces. If they fit in nicely, they are highly appreciated. This is what happens with almonds. They are higher in calcium than any other nut, they are packed with antioxidants, vitamin E, magnesium (which facilitates calcium absorption), potassium and protein. In addition they contain no cholesterol, they are low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Before I finish I should add that osteoporosis levels are significantly higher in North America and Europe than anywhere else in the world, which illustrates all the above... Are you convinced? I definately go almond! |
