Can plants communicate?
Plants communicate. Research by Alan Bown of Brock University in Canada shows that plants have some sort of awareness, because when they are "attacked" by a harmful bug, they release a toxin that attacks the bug's nervous system. It seems that a plant senses somehow that it is being attacked, and the plant reacts accordingly. When, for example, a drop of water touches the leaf of a plant it does not release defensive toxins. This could mean that the plant somehow can distinguish between harmful visitors and harmles waterdrops. A study by Nijmegen University researcher Josef Stuefer shows that herbal plants like strawberry, clover and reed naturally form networks, individual plants stay connected to each other by means of runners. If one plant is attacked by a caterpillar, the other, connected plants will receive a warning through these networks and they will "prepare" for the attack by pre-releasing some toxins, making themselves less attractive for the caterpillar. Plants also emit sounds: in 2002 researchers in Bonn attached a microphone to vegetation and found that under normal circumstances plants emit a bubbling sound, but when the plants were being attacked by insects they emitted piercing screeches. Do some research and you will be amazed by what you'll find. |

I wonder how much toxin my grass gives off when it is attacked by my lawnmower.
